Breakfast
This post is a little outside the realm of my usual snark and cynicism, but I feel like posting it so nyeh.
Yesterday, many tech sites reported that Wal-Mart was starting an online classifieds service Here.
I forwarded the link to some folks I work with as a heads-up and we got to talking.
I grew up in Bentonville, where Wal-Mart HQ is located. The place fairly exudes Wal-Mart corporate, so anytime I visit I pick up whatever is going on by osmosis. Doesn't make me an expert, but when I see moves like this I have a pretty good idea what they're thinking.
My take:
They are working hard to build their online brand. They want to drive traffic to their online store and I bet they’re hoping a classifieds service will accomplish that. I’m betting they’ll serve ads from their online store next to search results, so If someone is looking for a lava lamp and there aren’t any classified listings, they’ll show you where you can buy one from Walmart.com instead. (more after the jump)
I was just reading the national news sites' coverage of the multiple national disasters going on in the world... The lingering effects of the Myanmar cyclone, the tornadoes across the southern US, and the earthquake this morning in China.
Then I decided to check out what our local news outlets were saying.
Here's the Commercial Appeal's lead story from this morning:

It's a stupid headline no matter how you slice it, but it's just sad in light of what's actually going on in the world today.

So the first weekend of 2008 was a relaxing one.
Found out Friday afternoon that I get to go to a web publishing conference on the company's tab at the end of January. Bonus: it's in San Francisco.
Aside from an hour layover in LAX, I haven't ever been to California so I'm pretty excited.
I decided to pay for an extra night at the hotel so I could have some time to futz around in a new city. I've already decided that the majority of my day will be spent at SFMOMA.
I browsed the collection highlights and they have 2 of my favorite pieces in their collection. I did my thesis for my art minor on this one by Marcel Duchamp:
.
Yes, it's a urinal. Ask me why it's so damn important and prepare for a long explanation that might just make you appreciate ceramic bathroom fixtures in a way you never thought possible.
They also have my favorite Rothko on hand:

PLUS the Olafur Eliasson exhibition looks delicious.
Looks like I'll be spending my WHOLE day at the museum. C'est la Vie (hat tip of the beret to Duchamp along with that one. Har har).

Other adjectives could include: hideous, tacky, extravagant, garish, tasteless, graceless, etc..
Just read the descriptions in the above article... jeebus.
I think I should remind Pastor Willie Brown (selling mink and suede coats from $6000 - $7000) of the words of a poor Jew who lived over 2,000 years ago:
Jesus said, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven...
...It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. Matthew 19: 21,24
Also see Matthew 21:12 for what ol' JC had to say about doing business under the auspices of a meeting in the name of the Lord. (Hint: JC gets pissed, throws down on some money changers. The only verse in the Bible where JC shows anger. Interesting.)
(Forgive the Bible thumping, but sometimes it's best to thump the thumpers.)

So I was talking with the illustrious Tim Sampson the other night. Naturally, our cynical banter turned to the recent faux-news from the "entertainment" world that Paris Hilton has given herself a deadline to be married and pregnant within a year.
Tim and I were both horrified at the prospect of this woman actually reproducing. How can such a useless person succeed in the grand scheme of passing genes to future generations?? Where has natural selection gotten us?? Darwin, where art thou?!
We both decided it was in the best interest of mankind to stop this evolutionary tragedy from occurring. Soooo, (naturally) we decided that the best thing to do is start a petition to Sterilize Paris. If we get 1,000 signatures, she has to get her tubes tied. I will even pay for it.

*sigh* where to begin?
spent the weekend at P-groove's Amberland in Lafayette, Georgia.
east tennessee has some really beautiful mountains.
despite the oppressive heat during the day, we had an awesome time. I managed to keep from getting TOO sunburned and kept from breaking/losing TOO much of my stuff.
didn't get to bathe for 3 days b/c the showers were lake water (which looked pretty gross) and i was afraid my new tatt would get infected. but, the shower i took last night was heavenly.
it was really nice to see rich and james and to meet james' girlfriend.
the only major downside to the whole trip was returning to my apartment to find my laptop staring blankly back at me.
it's turned on and I can faintly makeout my desktop image, but the screen is pretty much just blank. i think the monitor burned out.
normally this would be just a minor inconvenience, but my laptop is basically my window to the world. I don't have a TV and I don't have a stereo, so right now I'm cut off from most of my usual entertainment. To my friends with TVs, i may be getting pretty bored until this thing gets fixed, so throw me a bone and invite me to your couch.
but all in all, i had a fantastic holiday weekend. definitely some new things going on in my head lately. for the first time in recent memory, i've got someone who i actually MISS when i'm not with her, someone who i feel like i NEED to talk to regularly. finally realizing that i can't (gasp) do it all on my own...

Read my comment on the Flyer article. I post as John Coyote.
Oh shit, my secret is out....
Personal note: leaving shortly for Amberland. If you're going, see you there. If you're not, enjoy having less fun than me this weekend...

There's another one on the way.
Just another mouth to feed.
Although the Memphis Zoo will be footing the bill for all of the pre/post-natal care, the cub will still belong to China.
"As for names, Brady said it's up to the Chinese, who will own the cub and will take it back after four years."
We don't even get to name the freakin thing.
And if Ya Ya rejects the cub, zookeepers will have to raise the cub themselves, which requires 24-hour supervision.
I think Memphians should vote on whether we want this thing or not. We're the ones who have to pay for it. I say we put her on the pill...

Got my first tattoo yesterday. Check it out:

Thanks a million to Shannon at Ramesses' Shadow. He did an amazing job.
In other news, saw The Grip once again at the Buc last night. I'm really excited that they have a regular Tuesday night gig now. Find me there, every week, from now til ever.
I'm going to P-Groove's Amberland this weekend. P is finally taking Sabs to a hippie festival. And we're camping, which I'm always excited about. Going out to buy some supplies this afterlunch I think. Time to get dirty in the woods!
Take care kiddies
